Blog Post #5 Part 2
PLN is a personal learning network. Around the 5th week of school, I began creating my PLN. I used my PLN to help me connect with teachers, students and others around the world through technology such as twitter, blogging, ect. I first began using people Dr. Strange first recommended in the blog assignment. Now, I am starting to develop my own PLN on my own and choose things and people I want to add to it. For example, I really enjoyed reading Mrs. Morris's Blog that I added her Blog to my PLN that way I can access it easily at anytime.

Teaching Can Be a Profession by Joel Klein
Problems with Teaching in Teaching our children can be a profession:
1.Problem with picking teachers
2.Problem with seniority
Solutions to these problems stated in the article:
1. Don't just pick teachers because they have a college degree
2. Just because a teacher has been there longer, doesn't mean they are better then a teacher who just got hired.
Joel Klein stated in his article that in order to make teaching more professional, schools shouldn't just choose anyone with a college degree. I agree with this problem to a certain extent. I believe that if they did earn their degree, they should be given a chance. They did work hard for it. I do agree in looking into how well they did in college as far as test scores and grades. I wouldn't hire someone who barely made it into a well populated income school. It is not fair to the ones who have been working for year in a low income school.
He also stated that there was a problem with seniority. When lay off's come, it usually works as seniority stay and the recently hired leave. But it is not always fair that way. It should be the one with the least effective teaching strategies leave. So, I do agree with Joel and his solution in his article about this problem completely.
There are many other problems in Education that need changing such as: giving far more school choices to families, using technology to improve teaching and learning, adopting a knowledge-based curriculum and starting education before a child is 5 years old. Joel seems to think that if he could change one it would be to professionalize teaching. I agree with him. Teachers and education need to become more professionalized.

I personally believe that technology is useful in Education. Just like the video,Top 10 Reasons to Use Technology in Education: iPad, Tablet, Computer, Listening Centers stated that students love it. As teachers or future teachers, you want your students to be engaged in what you are doing. If students love using technology then why not incorporate it into lessons so it helps students stay engaged. Not only did the video state that it is something that students love, but it also stated that it is professional. And as a teacher, you want to be professional.
Also in the video, Technology in the Classroom: Digital Media I like how it showed how a classroom has changed over time and how technology is changing. As technology changes, teachers should never stop learning and continue to learn the new technology to help keep their students up to date with it.
If I had to give 3 reason to persuade someone that technology is useful here would be my reasons:
1. Students love it
2. It engages students
3. There are may tools out there to help you learn new technology(Not knowing how to use it should never be an excuse)

Teaching Math to the blind
Teaching math to the blind is very difficult. Braille is the language that a blind person uses to read or write. The problem with braille is that it is very linear. Blind students are not able to how even the most simple math problems are two dimensional. When given an addition problem, a hearing student would normally line up the numbers to solve the problem. A student that is blind would see the problem on the same line.

Art Karshmer is a professor at the University of San Francisco School of Management and Chairman of the Department of Technology. He developed a system that translates the 2-dimensional concepts of mathematical problems into a single dimensionality of braille to allow a blind student to understand those concepts into their visual cortex through touch and electronic feedback. He believes that students that are blind are barred from the study of all of the core or "stem " sciences that rely on math as their root language. His system uses small blacks with braille numbers that can be placed on a grid and can be read to the student. The block itself can also be scanned and read aloud by a computer. With this system, a braille student is able to lay out a math problem that same way a sighted student would see it on paper. Using this device with blind students can help build a foundation that will help them in their future studies.
In the video Assistive Technologies for Vision and Hearing Impaired Children , we learn facts about children in Australia who have hearing and vision impairment. This video shows many images of children using different forms of assistive technology in the classroom. From this video we learn that on average, one Australian child is identified with impaired hearing every day! One in every 2500 children have vision impairment. We see these students participating in class and activities just as everyone without disabilities would do. This is a very inspirational video that proves to us that all children can interact with one another in and out of the classroom.
The video chose was Assistive Technology Rocks My Classroom! This video is about a girl named Elina, who has a physical disability called athetoid cerebral palsy. This disability makes it hard for Elina to use her muscles for everyday activities such as: eating, walking and even talking. She started using assistive technology when she was just nine years old. Using assistive tech Elina is able to do things like: draw, paint, write in cursive and speak! She has accomplished so many things by using this technology. Elina and her classmates even taught others how to use this technology at an international conference! Elina is a perfect example of how assistive technology can help students with disabilities accomplish long term goals and overcome so many obstacles.
The The Mountbatten, is an amazing tool that is used to type braille. This tool provides feedback to the individual as they are typing. It says each letter out loud as each button is pushed. This makes it very easy for someone who is blind to avoid making mistakes while typing. The mountbatten is a handy tool that allows files to be sent and received from a computer. It can also save files for next time when a student needs a break and wants to return to their work later. It is great for someone who is just starting to learn braille. By using this tool, students who are blind will not feel as left out during group projects in class.
The next video, Russel Hinderman using the Mountbatten, is a video I found on my own. In this video Russel is shown learning how to use the Mountbatten. He seems very eager to use the tool. This video shows that the Mountbatten can indeed be used by young students. I think this tool could be handy for anyone! The Mountbatten allows teachers to guide their students in the right direction as the tool does the talking. I think this brailler is something that is very easy to use, and can be very helpful even if students don't have a teacher sitting next to them as they type. Blind children could also use the Mountbatten for independent learning exercises.
In the article How The Blind Use A IPad it explains how a blind person uses the iPad. Apple has many programs an apps for the blind. What can we learn about teaching and learning from these teachers?
Back To The Future
I really enjoyed watching this video. It was really neat to watch the experiment that Brian Cosby did with his class. He not only got his classes attention but he used technology to get other people in different states involved. This video just goes to show people how technology can connect people all around the world.
Blended Learning Cycle
The first thing that I found very interesting in this video was how he cited that he used twitter to connect with someone around the world. To be honest, before starting in EDM310 I never though that twitter could be a helpful tool in education but I am beginning to see twitter differently. The second thing that I learned in this video was what the blended learning cycle was. It is when you combine "Online, Mobile, and Classroom"(Blended Learning) with "Engage, Explore, Explain, Expand, and Evaluate"(Learning Cycle).
Teaching Digital Citizenship In Elementary School
This video was a very good video that shows people how technology is good to use in classrooms and how elementary schools are using it. This video shows how elementary classrooms are using it to make comic books.
Project Based Learning
This video is all about PBL. It explains that in PBL that the students make most of the decisions on their own and how PBL is a great tool in education.
Roosevelt Elementary's PBL program
This video shows how Roosevelt Elementary uses project based learning in their school. Project Based Learning is where students use projects to gain more knowledge. Projects help students retain information better then just telling them the information. It requires them to use the information they have received.

Blog Post 10
I enjoyed watching the interviews between Dr. Strange and Kathy Cassidy. Kathy made a lot of great points about technology. I loved how Kathy stated that because technology is so advanced and used by many, that teachers need to incorporate it in lessons so that students learn more about it. Technology is vital. Many people say that it is too hard to learn technology since they never really used it growing up, but Kathy made a great point about how technology is such a useful tool because it is easy to learn new tools.
I also loved how Kathy uses blogging in her classroom. She allows students to blog and she keeps a blogging portfolio for her students and allows parents to view it at any time. I believe this is great for parents because they can access it at any time in there connivence. When I become a teacher I would definitely love to use blogging in my classroom. My only concern was addressed in Kathy's interview. I was concerned about keeping students name safe on the internet. Kathy stated that she doesn't use last names on blogging.
I enjoyed watching Kathy's Interview and gained more knowledge to use when I become a teacher.

In the youtube video, it also explains why PBL is important for teachers. It states that PBL has 4 parts: Questioning, Investigating, Sharing, and Reflecting. My favorite quote from this video is "I never teach my pupils, I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn." This quote reminds me of one of Dr. Stange's Motto "No more Burp-Back Education." This quote and PBL help this motto possible. By having PBL, teachers are helping students retain the information they learn and apply it to something.
PBL: What motivates students today
In this video, students explain different techniques that motivate them. A few of my favorites are the classroom money, the candy, and the verbal rewarding. This video was very interesting. It had some great tips to use for when I become a teacher.
Two students solve the case of the watery ketchup by designing a new cap
This video was really cool to watch. It amazed me that two students invented something to fix a problem. It shows you what PBL can really do for students. The two students invented a cap to fix watery ketchup. It took them a year but they didn't give up.

Blog Post 8
WOW! This blog post assignment is my favorite one so far. The interview by Randy Paush was so encouraging to watch. As a 20 year old who just recently went through open heart surgery in June of 2014 because of a hole in my heart, I can somewhat relate to Randy. Not only did I just go though open heart surgery to fix a hole in my heart but in my recent check up, Doctors have found another hole. We are uncertain at this moment if it can be fixed or not. Just like Randy stated in his lecture "It is what it is, we cannot change it." I am not allowing what I am going through to stop me from pursuing my dreams and passions. I still continue to work full time, go to school full time, and serve in the ministry. I enjoy my life. Yes, moments are hard but each and every day is a blessing!
Not only was Randy Paush lecture encouraging but it also taught me a lot. He talked about 3 thing in his last lecture: His childhood dreams, helping others establish their childhood dreams, and lessons learned.
Her are some of the lessons I learned while watching his last lecture:
1. Have fun
2. Decide if you are tiger or Eeyore
3. Never lose the child like wonder
4. Help others
5. Tell the truth
6. Be earnest
7. Apologize when you mess up
8. Don't complain- work harder
9. Show gratitude
10. Focus on others
All of these are lesson that Randy learned throughout his life that I found valuable. One of my favorite quotes that he said in his last lecture was "Brick walls show our dedication." This quote is so true. We all hit some brick walls in our lifetime but its what we do after we hit them that really matter. It shows our determination.

Implications and Teaching Opportunities for Camera Use in Teaching and Learning
With the following information posted above I believe that technology is highly affecting everyone. Technology is becoming an everyday usage for people. With that being said, because it is becoming an everyday thing teachers are learning how to use it more in there lessons plans. I believe it is necessary to use technology in classroom settings with this generation. Because kids are growing up around it, this is becoming the best way to keep their attention.
This also goes for parents, now-a-days parents are using technology to entertain there kids. I have seen multiple parents give their child their phone while running errands. I am not saying this is bad, I am saying this is the new generation and we as future teachers need to develop ways to bring technology into our lesson plans.
Here are a few ideas I would use as a teacher to incorporate technology:
1. Video recording themselves readings and listening to themselves and following along
2. Downloading apps that help children with math and reading
3. Teaching children how to blog which will help with communication and spelling

How Do We All Become Learners?
Before I graduate and become a teacher, I have a lot of preparation to do. There are many things that I do not know but I do know that we never stop learning. Even after I graduate I will continue to learn. I do have some goals set out for me before I graduate to help me become a better teacher. The goals are to improve my weaknesses. My weaknesses is things that involve technology. I never really grew up around technology in my house so I am not familiar with it like some people are. I will say that I have gotten a lot better with it since this class. EDM 310 pushes me to become a better learner and teacher. Although I do have some weakness, I would consider myself to have some strengths. My strengths are: Organization and patience.
Summary of what I learned from the following Videos:
Video: How to make an audio QR Code
This video taught me how to record your voice. This tip is very helpful when becoming a teacher because as a teacher you can record yourself for your students to listen to. It also taught me how to turn the recording into a QR code by using the website www.qrcode-monkey.com.
Video: IPad Reading Center
This video was another helpful tool when becoming a teacher. It showed me how to teach kids to use technology. Students used iPads as a center. During the center they would record themselves reading and then listen to themselves and read along again. This technique taught the kids how to incorporate technology with reading.
Video: Poplet with Ginger Tuck
This video teacher taught me what a poplet is and why they are helpful. A poplet is an app that students use to create a visual form of a text. By using there iPad they take pictures of the book they are reading and also type the text they are reading. This teaches them how to use technology while learning how to read and spell.
Video: Alabama Virtual Library and Kindergarten Students
This video teaches students how to use Alabama Virtual Library though a iPad. Alabama Virtual Library is a search engine that allows you to search a key word and it will show you all the books, articles, movies, ext related to the keyword.
Video: Tammy Shirley Discovery Education Board Builder Moon Project
This video teaches students how to use Discovery Board Builder. The teacher shows you how to us it in the video and so does the student. This app is a great tool to use during a project.
Video: Mrs. Tassin's 2nd Grade students share Board Builder Project
This video was a great example of how students use Board Builder for there projects. This app is a great tool for students of all ages.
Video: Using iMovies and the Alabama Virtual in Kindergarten
This video amazed me. It showed me how technology is so advanced now that even Kindergarteners are using it. It amazed me that Kindergarteners are doing book trailers and I just did my first one a week ago. It amazes me. Not only are they using iMovies but they are also learning how to use AVL in kindergarten. I didn't learn what AVL was until a few years ago. This amazes me how much technology is advancing. It also makes me glad that I am in EDM310 so I can learn and teach myself more about technology.

What Did I Learn From Anthony Capps?
This weeks Blog assignment was very interesting and helpful to me. I loved watching all the videos and loved learning all the new information from Anthony. He seems like a very intelligent man. He gave multiple examples of PBL( Project Based Learning) and why it is so helpful.
I think my favorite example that he gave was from the first video. Anthony stated in the video that a big debate was going on about if women should fight in open combat? So Anthony used PBL to help his students in there writing, language, and social studies skills. He made them write a letter to the congressmen on their opinion on if women should be allowed to fight in open combat or not. This project gave his students a chance to seek information out on the topic and to develop better writing skills.
Another thing I loved that Anthony states in the video "Anthony and Strange tips for teachers Part 1" is all the tips him and Dr. Strange give. They state that teachers need to wanna be learners there selves. I completely agree with this, not only should the students want to learn but also the teachers. No one ever knows everything, there is always room for learning. I also love that they state that teachers need to be flexible. As a preschool teacher myself, I realize they flexibility is key in becoming a great teacher. Sometimes a lesson plan may not go as you planned and you have to be flexible and fix it by either having a back up plan or re-doing the lesson plan.
I enjoyed every video from Anthony Capps. It was very helpful and filled with lots of valuable information. Thank you Dr. Strange for assigning this assignment.

My Progress of my PLN!
According to Wikipedia a PLN is an informal learning network that consists of the people a learner interacts with and derives knowledge from in a personal learning environment. In a PLN, a person makes a connection with another person with the specific intent that some type of learning will occur because of that connection.
I developed my PLN by adding people like John Strange and other EDM staff members to my twitter. I also used other twitter accounts that were suggested during the blog assignment. In the middle of my PLN, I set up my google drive, my blog, my checklist master, my gmail, and the classroom blog.
I enjoyed going though the PLN programs and beginning to develop mine. I look forward to learning more about it.

What do we need to know about asking questions to become an effective teacher?
I have never been one that has ever had a problem with asking questions. Anyone who knows me knows that I always ask question. If I don't understand something I always ask questions. So when I first looked at the question for this blog post, I automatically thought, "Well this will be easy." I was so wrong. I never realized that there was such a pressure on teachers about asking questions. Before reading the assignments for this blog I never knew there was a right way and a wrong way to asking questions.
I found that all of the assignments where helpful but the two I found most helpful to me was Asking Questions to Improve learning and Three Ways to Ask Better Questions in the Classroom. I believe that the information in these two blogs really helped me learn what I needed know about asking questions to become an effective teacher.
The blog "Asking Questions to Improve Learning" taught me how avoiding asking "leading questions", the difference in "open" and "closed" question, and a few other tips. A "leading question" discourages students to think on their own. When asking questions, you want students to think on their own and another way to do that is to use open ended questions. Closed ended question tend to be the "yes" or "no" answers and open ended question lead others to think and answer more then a one word answer. Another thing I learned in this blog is that when doing a class discussion, only ask one question at a time. This allows for the students to really think about it and give more then just a one word answer.

2. Play with questions- encourage students to think about it for a little while and then give the answer

C4T#1 for Blog: Cooperative Catalyst
Summary of the teachers blog 1:
My teacher was Stephen Hurley and his blog was titled “Welcoming our Newest Colleagues: Letter to A Beginning Teacher”. His blog was directed toward new teachers. Although his blog was directed towards new teachers, he did a great job including others in the education field. In the blog he proposed an idea that new teachers share there feelings about the school year over voiceEd.ca. Not only did he direct the idea towards new teachers, he also directed it toward anyone in the education field. But like I stated earlier, the blog was directed more towards new teachers. His blog was a lot of his own opinion rather than facts.
My comment to the teachers blog:
"I truly enjoyed reading your blog and looking through your blog page. My name is Kayla Cooper and I am a student at the University of South Alabama. I am currently in an Education Course where I am learning how to use blogger. So, I am exploring other blogs out there. Summary of the teachers blog 2:
My teacher was Robin Clane and her blog was titled "To Quit or Not to Quit: That is The Question". Her blog was about how teachers are either quitting or either wanting to change the system. She states the neither side is "the right thing to do". She never really gives her "side" but she states that all students learn differently. So in my opinion, she thinks that leaving is not the answer but changing it is not the answer either because each student is different. Her last sentences states, "We need educators working both inside and outside of the system to build the kind of movement we need to create lasting change." I believe this sentences wraps up her blog.

You could not have said anything any better. I completely agree with everything stated. I believe leaving the education system in not the right answer but I also believe that changing it completely is not the right answer. I personally believe that every student is different and teachers need to realize that. So with that being said, I agree with you when you stated that there is a lack of understanding that each student learns different.
